Background: The aim of this study is to review clinical trials using adolescent smoking cessation programs in Korea and to assess their methodology and results.
Methods: Electronic literature searches for studies (randomized trials, nonrandomized trials) of adolescent smoking cessation programs were performed in six electronic databases and hand searches. English and Korean articles were included. Before-after study and prevention programs were excluded.
Results: A total of 19 studies met the inclusion criteria. Four randomized controlled trials, and fi fteen non-randomized trials were included. Six studies used cognitive-behavioral smoking programs. Two studies used self-effi cacy promotion smoking cessation programs, and two studies used group counseling programs. Compared to baseline, the change in amount of smoking after smoking cessation program treatment was signifi cant in 12 studies. In general, all of the studies had some methodological weaknesses according to the quality criteria applied.
Conclusion: There are many low-quality studies of adolescent smoking cessation programs in Korea. To evaluate the ffects of adolescent smoking cessation programs, more rigorous trials are warranted.
